I just did a pc restore and needed to re-install most of my softwares and
more importantly the windows updates. But somehow it always says failed:
"the following updates were not installed:
critical update for windows xp(k8886185)
security update for windows xp(number here)
etc.
"

I tried reinstalling the newest version of windows automatic updater and
activating the "wu" something .dll in cmd and it still doesn't work.

thank you

See if anything here helps.

Update Problems after Repair Install

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by
using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation

Hello Ix,

Go ahead and download Dial-ª-Fix.

<http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix> (Download near bottom)

Click the Double green checkmark and click Go.

After it has finished, Reboot

Try Windows Update and see if you can get your updates instªlled.

Unless you had some reason not to, you probably should of installed SP3
first. You'll need to at one point.

Additionally, though fixes, there is a bug in the Windows Agent with 80 or
more updates required. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104
