Thanks for trying, but, after trying all of the suggestions in your original
post, I was sitll unable to download any updates.
The end result: I saved the files I needed, reformatted the hard drive, and
reinstalled windows. I was then able to install and get updates for Norton
Antivirus and Windows Me. I reloaded my other software and virus-scanned all
my original files before putting them back on the drive. So far, everything
is working okay. It has only been about a week, so I am hoping it continues.
By the way, I had McAfee, Spybot, Ad-Aware SE installed on the computer, and
used all of them regularly. I may have picked up a piece of malware that they
all missed. More likely, after several years of use, I just needed to
completely clean up the mess and start over.
Thanks again and please keep up the good work all you MVPs do. Though your
suggestions weren't the solution, I learned a tremendous amount abot spyware
and malware by reding all the material associated with your suggestions, and
I am now better equipped to handle future problems.
