Can't install any programs

I had to replace the motherboard on my machine and had to reinstall Vista.
After reinstall I installed all the drivers etc for the motherboard,
downloaded and installed all the updates and tried to run the SP1 cd sent by
Microsoft but I got the message that "Setup.exe has stopped working". I get
the same with any program I try to install (using run as administrator).

Any idea what may be causing this? Looks like the installation was not
successful and I may have to start again but dont really want to do this
unless absolutely necessary.

Ok will have a look.

IE and some of the games that were installed by the OS run ok, I have not
installed any program.
