Can't install any updates at all...What do i do next??

Hi,

I am running windows xp home edition, and have had no problems until
recently updating files etc. Now although they are downloading fine, at the
end I get a message that installation has failed, and to click the
installation history link to get the error message. Trouble is...there's no
error code. I think its something to do with windows registry being
corrupted - but i don't even know what that means, let alone how to fix it.
Would appreciate any suggestions.
