I have WinXP-SP2 installed, but the critcal update KB834707 always fails
installation. I also tried saving to disk and install, but still fails.

Do you have AOL? If so, read the link, if not, post back with any error
message(other than installation failed)

I don't use AOL and I have 2 Out of 3 PC's at home that updated ok. This is
an AMD machine, the other 2 are intel. The error message I get is the pop-up
window to send message to MS. If it will help I could type in the first few
lines of the error report.
Thanks

Yes, post any error messages. Also, do you have error reporting enabled?
Also, there are 2 different patches for that, I did some digging and this is
what I found:

Here is a snippet from the article, and that link takes you to the article
that has the links to the downloads.

This cumulative patch, KB834707, for Internet Explorer 6 (Windows XP SP2
version) includes all previously released patches and eliminates newly
discovered vulnerabilities. Importantly, Microsoft have begun
differentiating between the version of Internet Explorer that was included
with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer 6 SP1 on pre-SP2 or Windows 2000
PCs. Yes it's a confusing scenario. If you have XP SP2, get this update. If
you have Windows 2000 or XP without SP2 (such as SP1), download the other
update.

Hi

In your windows folder, please look for the following log file and
see if it gives any clue to why the installations fails:

KB834707.log

You might have a incomplete SP2 installation.

In the KB article
"You receive an "Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry
point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the dynamic link library
Shlwapi.dll" error message after you install the MS04-038 security update"
at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=888162

see

"Q1: I do not think my computer is in an "incomplete Windows XP SP2
state." How can I know for sure?"

If one of the two methods to check the SP2 installation indicates that
it is incomplete, you should uninstall SP2 and then install SP2 again
(that is also described in the KB article above).
