Can't Install KB958215 - Error Code: 0X80070005

I'm hoping someone can help me. The recent updates went smoothly for me,
expect for one: automatic update keeps prompting me to install KB958215. I
try to install it, but it tells me that it failed to install and I have to
restart. Upon restart, I get the same update prompt again with each
installation attemp failing.

Any ideas why it won't install?

Thanks in advance.

As an update, I tried downloading just the update (KB958215 for WINXP)
directly from Microsoft's download center. I ran it and it seemed to
progress fine, but right when it got to registry update portion, the
installation failed and said: Access Denied.

I'm the only user on this computer and I have full administration rights, so
I'm at a total loss.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot Tea Timer,
AVG Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before
attempting to install the update(s). If you disable the third-party
firewall, make certain that you enable the Windows Firewall!

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB958215).

LOOK!! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE,
call the above number and ask to be transferred to the "Consumer IE queue"
(which is 47830).

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

Thank you PA Bear, this resolved it!

Apparently, McAfee Security Center was blocking this update. I temporarily
disabled McAfee's VirusGuard Active Scanner, Spyware Guard and SystemsGuard
(which guards against changes to your PC files) and the update went through!

Success! Thanks again Bear!

I disabled them all but update still fails, I even downloaded the update
manually as .exe and run it but I get error saying the files in the package
is incompatible with my system, I have made sure it's the correct update for
IE7 + XP

YW & thanks for your feedback.

Tell me a few things, please:

Is McAfee Security Center a freebie from your ISP or have you purchased it?

Did you recently install or upgrade McAfee Security Center?

Has another McAfee application ever been installed on this machine (e.g., a
free-trial that came preinstalled when you bought the machine)?

Your answers may well help a lot of other users so thanks.

Bear,

It's McAfee Security Center 9.0 I believe. This computer (a Dell) is about
three years old. A freebie McAfee (not the security center) came
pre-installed from Dell but I went ahead and purchased an upgrade (the entire
McAfee Security Center) through an "Upgrade" offer from McAfee after
registering the freebie product (shortly after purchase). This upgrade was
an online purchase and everything was downloaded. I'm subscribed to McAfee
and get all updates automatically.

Hopefully that helps.
