Can't install KBKB942615

I have XP-SP2 and IE7; AVG AV, Comodo Firewall, other bits and pieces
(Spyware Guard, Winpatrol)

I just noticed that since early December 2007 the update KB942615 (MS07-069)
claimed to be a critical update, has not been installing. I checked the MS
Update forums (I don't remember which one exactly), and it seems a lot of
people are having a lot of trouble with this update. Either they cannot
install it or if they do install it they lose internet connectivity.
What is going on here? Should I be taking any action? I can't afford to
lose internet connectivity even for a short time, and I don't have time to
mess around with it.
Thanks.
Baruch

<title>MS07-069: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer</title>
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=942615

Details? What exactly are you noticing?

E.g. recently I noticed that an update had apparently been downloading
for a ridiculously long number of days. (I had checked with bitsadmin and
found out one was suspended.) So I resumed it also with bitsadmin and then
the download completed and it installed normally. A secondary bonus was
that the WUAU SysTray icon started behaving normally again too.

I think that was only happening for some small subset of IE6 users
and has now been fixed by a subsequent superseding update.
E.g. there is a link to KB946627 in the above article.

I performed a manual Microsoft update and requested interactive installation
(not automatic). The update downloaded and after the message "starting
installation" the message "update not installed" appeared. I then checked the
update history, and saw that from early December this update is marked with a
red X i.e. the installation failed.

Can you click on those to see the error code(s) being reported?

BTW if you want to avoid WUAU completely you could do a manual
download and install using the link in the notification's details.
E.g. doing that would mean you wouldn't have to spend time trying to
figure out either what is wrong with your WUAU or how to fix it.

Good luck

The error message I have been receiving is 0x80070005.

In response to your suggestion to do the installation manually, I tried that
as well and was equally unsuccessful. The links all lead to the Microsoft
Update site, and the installation attempts all fail.

Also auto update works fine all the other updates install w/o any difficulty.
It is just this one that isn't working.

That is typically a symptom of a permissions problem.

Good. Then your problem has nothing to do with Windows Update
and you may get more informed help from a newsgroup which specializes
in whatever product the update is for.

Oh. It's for IE7? That update creates a log which ends in IE7.log
Look for clues in %windir%\KB942615-IE7.log

Since you are running the update manually you have the option of requesting
a verbose log (e.g. via a /verbose switch on the command line) and if even
that is not enough to identify the problem (typically a registry key which some
third-party security program has made unwritable) you can run ProcMon
to supplement either log. See the associated TechNet Security Bulletin
(linked from the KB article) for more info about "Deployment." Note that you
have to drill down a few levels to expand to that level of detail.

Hmm... I just noticed another option down there which looks like it might
be useful: /ER (extended error reporting)

Good luck
