Can't Install Microsoft Updates

When I try to install updates, it says "Checking for the latest updates on
your computer" for several minutes or more, and nothing ever happens. The
green bars just move across the screen over and over. Then it finally times
out with the error:

[Error number: 0x8007277B]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.


I am running Windows XP home. I also am running anti-virus software, if
that makes a difference.

Please help. This has been happening any time I try to run an update.
