I have an HP 6830 deskjet printer (which according to my mom is old, and I
guess she would know, seeing as it used to be hers....) and I tried to hook
it up to my new computer today, but when I try to run the CD with the
software, it says it can't install it because I don't have IE 5.0 or higher.
-.- I use 7.0.
I read somewhere that some printers need drivers to run on vista, so I went
to the HP website and found their universal driver (or whatever it's called),
and I looked, and it doesn't support my printer.
is the printer just too old to use on my computer, or is it not compatible
or something?

could be too old to have drivers for vista.

if hp does not have.
and their generic one does not support it, you are probably right.

you can pick up pretty good printers for under $100.
even under $50 for refurbished.

5. Click Next and scroll down to "Printers", click once to Â*highlight and click Next.
6. Place a dot next to "Use the following port" and click NÂ*ext.
7. In the "Install Printer Software Screen", on the left siÂ*de scroll down to "HP"

I added the hardware and it worked. It says it's all ready to use.
But everytime I try to print a test page, it says there was an error printing.

The HP Printing Diagnostic Utility was created to diagnose and fix many
common issues preventing printing from the computer:

I believe the best solution is to by new printer.
With $50 you can find a nice hp printer.
Btw for older printers ink is very rare ti find and expensive
so...think smart

I have an older HP printer and vista. I had to uninstall the HP software
since it is incompatible with vista, as advised by the Windows Vista Update
Wizard. Ditto for the HP Diagnostics. Don't use any of the old HP software
with Vista. Uninstall all the HP software and drivers, remove the printer
from the Printers list in vista and reboot. HP does have a vista driver and
update for your printer (6830v)here:

Just install the printer with the vista driver and skip the old disk.
