i can't install my updates!!!

i am running windows xp 64bit version.....when i get that little yellow sign
on my taskbar tellling me that an update is available i click it and it
downloads it but it can't install it...i went to the microsoft website and
tried doing it there and still it told me that "updates did not install
successfully"....HELP PLEASE!!!!
