Greetings Barry,
What you'll need to do is remove the bits of the old install in the registry. To do so,
download and run the Windows Installer Cleanup tool:

It's pretty simple to use though. After the cleanup utility is installed (yes, more
installing), head over to Program Files\Windows Installer Cleanup and run the msicuu
executable. You'll be prompted with a list of installed products, including Messenger.
Just select Windows Live Messenger and choose Remove.
Now you should be able to install the latest. If you'd like a direct link to the latest
