Running under Vista Business. Downloaded SP1. When I try to install it, I get
this error: The detection failed, this can be due to a corrupted installation
database.

How do I get around this?

Mine just failed too, you could try repairing or reinstall Office 2007,
download the Service Pack again and try installing.

I am having the same problem! Using windows Update, I have tried 8 times
and get the Error Code# 78F. Also I went to MS Downloads and got the 2007
Office Service Pack 1 (SP1). I still can not install it. Starts out OK and
then Fails

Just wanted you to know you are not alone...

I've installed the Office SP on three different machines
and all have gone well. You could try disabling all programs
that are running in the background.... everything in the notification
area/systray. Or, try installing it in Safe Mode (F8).

if you google you will see that there is a way to include the UPDATES in an
UPDATES folder so that office will pull them and install them while you
install office for the first time...

this is not as good as slipstreaming but anyway. this might solve the issue

Insert your Office 2007 DVD in the drive and then try.
If you have more than one drive, try another if the first fails.

I thought the Windows Installer Service is disabled when in Safe Mode? Its
best if you recommend Diagnostics Mode.

Did you check which version of Office 2007 SP1 did you download. Hopefully it was not for the 64 bit OS version versus the 32 bit

I installed Office 2007 SP1 just fine in Safe Mode
on three different machines.

I installed Vista SP1 RC1 just fine in Safe Mode on
one machine. The full download install .exe, not
the one dependant on Vista's Update.

Any service pack I have ever installed has been done
from Safe Mode.

Now, the updates like http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=943899
cannot be installed in Safe Mode.

From MVP Patrick Schmid

I'd start with Office Diagnostics: Start, All Programs, Microsoft
Office, Office Tools.
If that doesn't help: Go into Control Panel, Uninstall a Program and hit
change for Office 2007, then repair.
