When I try to install Microsoft Office, I get a msg that says I have a
service pack that is incompletely installed and to visit Windows update.
Windows update says I need to install KB835732 and KB840987 even though I
have already downloaded, installed, and restarted them several times. They
dont seem to take. Anyone have any idea what could be going on here??
thankyou

I just saw Mow Green's response to Tony. I checked add/remove programs, they
are both there so they installed sucessfully,....I guess?

You might want to tell what system and version you have (Windows and Office).
I'm sure whom might help will want to know. (there is an "office" update
discussion group, but if you haven't posted there yet, I'd suggest wait a
bit...)

Make sure you have administrator rights when trying to update.
Have you installed updates from Windows Update in the past sucessfully on
this machine?

Yes, I have installed numerous updates besides these two. I dont want to
come across as too much of a dumbass, but I keep seeing a lot of info about
administrator rights and permissions, but I dont know how to tell which is
administrator and which isnt.

The machine is a Systemax, about 3 years old, with an ATHLON 2.4 GHZ processor

Well, I hope you get someone to help soon.

I might suggest un-installing the two you see in Add/Remove programs,
reboot, check again (confirm they are gone), then let Windows Update install
them fresh.

Why Office is not letting you continue, perhaps just because these are
incomplete (but this only a guess). Perhaps, you can install office first
(after the two above are gone, and you reboot). After which head to the
updates web page.

Last, the uninstall may not work (and might not know it). This possibility
(only you know what may have happened during some prior install or update),
you may want to wait for tomorrow at least... (I'll check on here for
tomorrow as well!)

Cya!

I'm sorry, a quick note about "administrator" rights...

XP is a multi-user operating system. That is, you can create computer
accounts for different people, even multiple accounts for one person. Each
account has seperate desktops, seperate "My Documents" and other such items.

There are also different "types" of computer accounts. Some examples might
be, "Adminstrators", "Power Users", "Users", "Guests". These have differentl
levels of permissions and rights.

The one we concerned with is "Administrators", as a saftey feature, only
Administrators have full access and permissions to install software. The
other "types" have lesser and lesser abilities. I am sure you have seen this
type of descriptions in the Help pages.

There are several ways to organize what accounts and what types are on a
computer, like how many different people use the computer, is there a
network/domain, etc.).

If you know you have administrator rights, I would un-install the two you
found in Add/Remove programs. If you don't know, I'd wait for tomorrow.
