Can't Install SP 3; Can't Restore SP 2 Either

I'd rather have a virus than have to deal with Windows updates.

I have XP Window Media Center OS.

When I tried to install SP 3 it went all the way to the end and just
failed without any excuse or error message. It just failed.

I tried all the suggestions on note 950718, and they all failed. Went
thru the whole process about 6 times with the same result. After
failure my network access was gone. It took a day to restore it.

I tried to reinstall SP 2, but that didn't work.

Window Media Center still doesn't work. When I try to start it I get an
ehshell.exe error message to the effect that the file is only partially
signed or corrupted.

I appear to be stuck half way between SP 2 and 3. My Dell XPS M140 did
not come with any Windows installation disks, so I can't reinstall.

I just want to get back they way I was before SP 3 screwed my computer
up. I have no plans to ever try to intall SP 3 on this computer again--
I'd rather hava a virus attack.

First - your Dell XPS M140 may not have come with Windows XP installation
CDs (because you chose that option) - but if you chose for it to come with
Windows XP, it came with a restoration method. Contact Dell or read your
manual.

Second - try using the free support offered to you:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...3&gprid=522131

Other things to know:

Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3

Release Notes for Windows XP Service Pack 3

Key things to note:

Internet Explorer:
"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of
Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall
Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta
version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP
SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,
uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002:
"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media Center Edition may malfunction. To
avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If
this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows
XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

It seems som people are unable to get further updates after installing
SP3... Seems some have experienced a symptom similar to doing a repair
installation on Windows XP - and the same fix seems to work for them for
that...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

ome people experience an "endless reboot" issue...

From PA Bear [MS MVP]:
Workarounds:

1. Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to INTELPMM.OLD.
2. After booting into Safe Mode:
Start --> Run --> (copy/paste)
sc config intelppm start= disabled
--> OK --> Reboot into normal (Windows) mode.

Check the log file svcpack.log, might give some small clue as to what went
wrong. I had a similar issue installing SP3, not quite as severe, but still
not quite recovered. The log file showed the following:
944.796: Starting process:
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.0.3705\ToGac .exe
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.0.3705\Micro soft.Vsa.Vb.CodeDOMProcessor.dll
944.875: Return Code = 1
944.875: ExConditionalRunInfProcesses: Error 0x1 while running processes in
section 'ToGac.RunProcess.ProcessesToRun.'
944.875: DoInstallation: ExConditionalRunInfProcess failed while durring
EXECUTE_AFTERINSTALL.
944.875: Service Pack 3 Setup encountered an error: An error in updating
your system has occurred.
948.718: Unregistration of sprecovr successful
948.718: An error in updating your system has occurred.

Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made.
964.406: Message displayed to the user: An error in updating your system has

964.406: User Input: OK
964.406: Starting process:

1447.687: Software Update Rollback has completed with return code 0xbc2.
This rollback requires a reboot.
1447.703: Service Pack 3 installation did not complete.

Windows XP has been partially updated and may not work properly.

Hi there, I have have just spent over 250€ and 5 days of time because of
installing Service Pack 3 on my Dell Dimension 9200 (Windows Media Edition
2005).

After updating to SP3 every program began to slow down or crash!

I finally got to speak to someone from Dell, and they told me that they are
aware of "Issues" with SP3, and have received many calls and complaints...in
fact the giy from Dell said the same thing happened to him!
He told me there is no solution to the problem and that I should not try an
update to SP3. So where does that leave me and my computer?

Dell should have sent an e-mail to all customers that were at risk and
warned them.

They (Dell) knew there was a problem...and ignored it!

They are quick to try and sell us new stuff all the time via e-mail.

So I guess this issue with SP3 may never be corrected.

It is a pain always having to keep my eye on the updates now...as now there
are updates coming through for SP3!!!
