I have 27 gigs of space of free space on my HD and the error message says I
need 4 more gigs and then cancels.

You have to be kidding right?

I don't have the error number now.

Did you leave out anything critical?? Like "This is installation on a
Macintosh computer..."?

The hard disk space requirements for WinXP SP3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947311

You receive error messages if there is insufficient free disk space on the
system drive to install the Windows XP SP3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956894

Error message when you try to install Windows XP SP3: "You do not have
enough free disk space on %SystemDrive% to archive the uninstall files"

disk capacity of 4 GB or less

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows

Hey thanks for the info..
I must say that this is nuts and why I went to a Mac. Never, never any
update problems. My old version of xp works fine, why break it?
I use windows on my Mac to run a couple of programs.
I am not going nuts over this. I just need to stop it trying to auto update.

thanks..

Your problem is that your mac software is not up to date. Simple as that -
thus whay I asked if you had a macintosh.

Is this a Macintosh running BootCamp?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950716

If you are going to own a macintosh (and use it as a macintosh) - you have
to keep both sides happy.

Important Installation of Boot Camp 2.1 is required before you install
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). For more information, visit the following
Apple Web site:
http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

Any reason you did not respond to my question previously?

SP3 should work fine on your computer.

WTF didn't you mention that you were attempting to install WinXP SP3 on a
Mac in your first post?

See Shennan's reply. You've gotta have BootCamp fully updated before you'll
be able to install WinXP SP3.

I am experiencing the low on memory problem on my Imac/bootcamp/windows xp. I
have discovered that if I go to my computer; disk drives C:, properties,
volumes, I get an indication of 0's for everything in the display. At the
bottom, it has a "populate" selector. If you sepcify populate, it will let
you run whatever, because it allocates the space. The remaining problem: I
cannot find how to make the "population" permanent. Each time I start up
Windows I have to "populate" again. Surely, someone must know what this bug
is, but i guess it will cost us if we ever find out who to contact: Windows
wants to charge for it, Mac says it's Microsoft's problem and if I can ever
find someone form Bootcamp, it will probably be the same. One of you techies
out there tell us how to get the volumes setting on windows XP permanently
allotted. I know thiw will help the first guy's problem.

Have you updated/upgraded BootCamp yet?
