We have two ThinkPads, both with identical up-to-date XP Pro SP2 and Office
Pro. Today, we got to install 6 Windows updates. The updates on one PC went
fine. On the other, the update for office 2003 (KB919029) failed. I
rebooted and went to Windows update again, and this update reappeared to be
installed. It failed again. I have tried cleaning out %tmp% and even going
through a repair cycle under Word, but attempts to install this patch still
fail with error code 0x80070643.

I have exactly the same problem with a different error code (0x52F) - I have
even downloaded the separate file and attempted to install it separately of
the MS, Win or Office Update processes after first uninstalling the obviously
corrupt version that appeared to be installed. It also failed as it appears
to be trying to install on a non-existant drive. The error may be caused by
the Word, Excel or Powerpoint Viewers also installed on this system, but I do
not have the tools to analyse Microsoft's convoluted code to confirm this.

Any new advice would be appreciated.

Greetings,
here's how I got mine to finally install:
1-Searched for lccwiz.dll & renamed (dll version was correct)
2-Uninstalled or removed KB919029 in Control Panel then rebooted.
3-Allowed update to complete.
Apparently, it appears that the update did install but didn't register
somewhere. Hope this helps.
Peace!

Tried all that before and had no luck but did find the solution for me by
removing the excel, powerpoint and word viewer programs and downloaded the
full update file and installed that way.

MS support had me uninstall and re-install XP Office Pro. The patch seemed
to take OK when I went to Update to bring all patches up to date.

However, since then, this has been "the patch from hell!". Every few hours
I see a yellow shield promting me to install new updates. When I click on
this, this patch is installed successfully -- again, and again, and again,
every few hours. The Windows Live OneCare icon stays orange if I do not
perform the update.
