Can't install updates on brand-new XP SP2 emachines PC

Hi all,

I just unpacked and set up an emachines PC sunning XP Home SP2. When I go to
Start > Windows Update, Internet Explorer opens and prompts me to click
install to install Windows Update. I eventually get an error saying the
update failed.

Thanks for the reply. I ticked off everything on the check list and still I
can't get Windows Update to work. Emachines uses software called Big Fix to
administer updates. I don't like it at all. I wonder if it's interfering with
Windows Update somehow.

Disable it then try again.
Step 23 on the checklist may have done the same thing and more.

Sorry. I should have been more clear. Big Fix is disabled, as are all other
startup programs. Still no Windows Update.
