Can't install v6 ms update KB898461 - error 0x8007F001.

That update (v6 ms update KB898461) already installed on the system (it is in
the list of installed progs) but does not works when i on ms update site. It
is 45 times ofered me instal kb and can't finish that installation and
download auto updates. Above mentioned update worked as it should during very
long term before. Error code means that languege of the system different from
update languege - but that is not true! System lang=ru, update lang=ru. There
where some manipulations with east asian (chinese) pack.
No support articles exept "close but not as that's it-and all not in
english, russian or european langueges!"

No it does not help. I installed that kb 898461 before on my own and
installed on Engel's advice once again = in the result installation
finished successfully BUT STILL DOESN'T WORKS! as it should!
Update center still trying to install on my system that kb 898461 before all
other updates - so that very annoying.
I already reinstalled update agent, windows installer and even deinstalled
additional langueges - no reaction. No viruses, deffender working, brandmauer
running, security levels ok and i'am not idiot. It is strange that i can
download any updates manually but not in auto mode. XP PRO of course is
genuine validated. What is wrong microsoft? Who is guilty? Bill G.? Bush?
Monica Levinsky? All gang together?

0x8007F001 Setup cannot update your files because the
language\installed on your system is different from the update language.

Please post the *last* 50 or so lines of the WindowsUpdate.log
Go to Start > Run > type in [or copy&paste the below into the Open: line]

Good day to all,

I've been having the same problem described here and I guess some people
have been having it.
Before getting everyone high on hope, let me tell you, I still haven't found
a solution.

So, yes, it seems like the problem comes from something in windows telling
the update software that the system's in chinese but what?

In my case, I guess the problem came the day I installed a program to learn
chinese, which was very bad (can't remember the name, though, something like
learnchinese I think), uninstalled it and kaboom, off it went.

Another symptom I've observed is that, and I'd like some people with the
update pb to check this, when I try to use the arial ms unicode font, all
characters disappear. The font is invisible. In some programs, like audacity
or outlook express, this renders some features (or alert/inbox configs for OE
express) invisible and thus useless.
Other invisible fonts are Nsimsun and nsimsun - 1830.

I've already tried various combinations of advices given here or on the
french section on which I had a long discussion about that with a french mvp,
without success. BUT, one person with the same problem also had uninstalled a
chinese learning software. So, my guess is that it has something to do with a
key somewhere in the registry which fails to link some unicode. I know, I'm
vague, but
1 - I don't want to re-install everything from scratch, even if I think this
is the only solution
2 - I think this is a nice challenge.

The arial unicode font is still in the /fonts folder and clicking on it
makes it appear in good shape, everything seems ok. The only thing that could
keep the system from using it correctly should be found, i think, in the
registry in either a font or fontlink key.

Anyone up to this?

i get a error found: code 0x80004002

I had the same problem, my Windows XP installation language is German or in numbers ;-) 0407 but windows update always tried to install the english (0409) update on my machine which doesn't work..

After several researchs and googling without a solution I checked the .inf file of the windows update standalone installer and there I stumbled over the following registry key
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\MUILangu ages

On none english (0409) installations I think this key shouldn't have any entry's but in my case there was a string entry called: 0409 with the value 1

After deleting this entry windows update worked fine for me again without reinstalling Windows.

Maybe you need to delete all entries in there if there should be any others too like 0410, 0411 or whatever delete them too

I know it's a bit late but hopefully it'll help if someone else should have this problem again..

By the way I think it's a damn bug in Windows Update because it doesn't check the install language which can be found in:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Language

or at least it doesn't check/use that language if you have a language entry in
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\MUILangu ages

Want to fill a bug report but can't find the link to do that :-(
