Sandy,
Using Windows Explorer, open the KB893803.log located in the WINDOWS directory (folder). Look towards the very bottom of the log for any error codes. Or, just copy and paste this section into your next post : 56.872: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\msi.dll 57.032: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe 57.383: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\msihnd.dll 57.873: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\msimsg.dll 57.964: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\msisip.dll 58.174: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\DllCache\msi.dll 58.304: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\DllCache\msiexec.exe 58.374: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\DllCache\msihnd.dll 58.504: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\DllCache\msimsg.dll 58.775: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\DllCache\msisip.dll 58.775: DoInstallation: Installing assemblies with source root path: d:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\945ce6ce4 129a06d75e0187615c80210\ 58.775: Num Ticks for Copying files : 5078 58.815: Num Ticks for Reg update and deleting 0 size files : 40 58.845: ---- Old Information In The Registry ------ 58.865: Source :\DOCUME~1\MOWGRE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\A~NSISu_ .exe58.865: Destination: 58.865: Source :\WINDOWS\system32\_000119_.tmp.dll (3.1.4000.1427)58.865: Destination: 58.865: ---- New Information In The Registry ------ 58.875: Source :\DOCUME~1\MOWGRE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\A~NSISu_ .exe58.875: Destination: 58.885: Source :\WINDOWS\system32\_000119_.tmp.dll (3.1.4000.1427)58.885: Destination: 67.437: UpdateSpUpdSvcInf: Source [ProcessesToRunAfterReboot] section is empty; nothing to do. 67.437: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: d:\windows\system32\msisip.dll was no-delay replaced; reboot is required. 67.437: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: d:\windows\system32\dllcache\msisip.dll was no-delay replaced; reboot is required. 67.437: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: d:\windows\system32\msimsg.dll was no-delay replaced; reboot is required. 67.437: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: d:\windows\system32\dllcache\msimsg.dll was no-delay replaced; reboot is required. 67.437: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: d:\windows\system32\msihnd.dll was no-delay replaced; reboot is required. 67.437: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: d:\windows\system32\dllcache\msihnd.dll was no-delay replaced; reboot is required. 67.437: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: d:\windows\system32\msiexec.exe was no-delay replaced; reboot is required. 67.437: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: d:\windows\system32\dllcache\msiexec.exe was no-delay replaced; reboot is required. 67.437: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: d:\windows\system32\msi.dll was no-delay replaced; reboot is required. 67.437: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: d:\windows\system32\dllcache\msi.dll was no-delay replaced; reboot is required. 67.437: DoInstallation: A reboot is required to complete the installation of one or more files. 67.437: In Function SetVolatileFlag, line 11576, RegOpenKeyEx failed with error 0x2 67.437: In Function SetVolatileFlag, line 11593, RegOpenKeyEx failed with error 0x2 67.437: UpdateSpUpdSvcInf: Source [ProcessesToRunAfterReboot.RebootNotRequired] section is empty; nothing to do. 67.517: RebootNecessary = 1,WizardInput = 1 , DontReboot = 1, ForceRestart = 0 If the installation never reaches " Copied file: ", then post the section prior to that where the install fails. Sandy,
Upon comparing the log from your system with the one from mine, these sections stood out : 1 - 5.538: ---- Old Information In The Registry ------ 5.548: Source :\DOCUME~1\MOWGRE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\_iu14D2N .tmp (51.34.0.0)5.548: Destination: 5.548: ---- New Information In The Registry ------ 5.558: Source :\DOCUME~1\MOWGRE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\_iu14D2N .tmp (51.34.0.0)2 - 26.779: Missing file msi.dll Read this thread : http://forums.wugnet.com/Windows-Ins...derasc-15.html Naki posted 2 different means to resolve this. Suggest you try the first one as it appears that the .msi package on your system is not registered or is corrupted/damaged. Dear MowGreen,
Thank you for your solution! Naki's first solution DID fix my Windows Installer problem. If I could hug you...I would! I have been messing around with this problem off and on for 2 weeks. Now if I can just get Norton installed. I think that is what broke things in the first place.. sigh..... I just really wanted to thank you for giving a REAL answer, instead of answering my question with another question. I realize that this is a free service, but most of the time I don't get anywhere here. Every once in a while though I luck out and get someone who really knows what they are doing....helping! Don't go anywhere! I can't thank you enough. Many thanks. My 6-month old small-form-factor computer got sick and had to be fixed by the manufacturer. Before I sent it to them Windows was corrupt and could not be repaired from the install DVD. When it came back, Windows could be repaired (sigh of relief), but when I tried to update - well, you know - and I panicked. At least this newsgroup showed me that the problem was not with my computer. A small sigh of relief, but all of the suggestions in the NG and of my own invention failed until this. Thanks again, and a bigger sigh of relief. Well, I don't know for sure - I haven't yet gone on to the rest of the update process. [...] -- Gene E. After posting the above, I went to Add/Remove Programs. This time, unlike all the other times (there were many!), Windows Installer 3.1 appeared, so I removed it. When I went to Windows Update (after rebooting, natch), it installed WI 3.1 OK, and after booting and going to Windows Update again, I now see a normal screen without WI 3.1 and with a million pending updates (a result of the repair installation mentioned above). One remark: the first seemingly successful installation of WI 3.1 was done by manually running the file I had downloaded from Microsoft. The second - and apparently really successful - installation was done by going to the Windows Update site and clicking on Express Install. Thanks for helping me get there by this winding path! -- Gene E. Bloch (Gino) ... letters617blochg3251 (replace the numbers by "at" and "dotcom") |

Only it still was messed up! Yesterday I went to install the first .msi file since the update. Windows asked me what to do, instead of installing. Eventually I ascertained that msiexec.exe was missing. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Installer, but no joy. Ultimately, I found the file in a directory under C:\Windows\Software Distribution\download\lots of hex digits and copied it to C:\Windows\System32, and all was (finally!!) working. The file association was OK without any action by me. Geez. -- Gene E. Bloch (Gino) letters617blochg3251 (replace the numbers by "at" and "dotcom") |
