It's crapped out after doing a dynamic OS upgrade (in order to enable sytem
restore console). I'f tried this thread, but can't seem to get the MSI files
to go away per the instructions.

Sure could use some help.
thanks

Have you tried to delete the version you may have already installed?

C:\WINDOWS\$MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$\spuninst\sp uninst.exe

Check you have that pathname first. If so, Start | Run ....
"C:\WINDOWS\$MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$\spuninst\s puninst.exe"
It may be better to try this in Safe Mode.
Make sure that c:\windows\system32\msi.dll has been removed.

You may have to reboot.

Did you download the Version 2 of Windows Installer 3.1?
If so, then try to install it. First check to see if
c:\windows\system32\msi.dll has been deleted.
I would try and do this in Safe Mode as well.

Check that appwiz.cpl is present in C:\Windows\System32

If so, try Start | Run .... appwiz.cpl

If it comes up, then try re-registering appwiz.cp from the
c:\windows\system32 folder or:

Start | Run ... regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\appwiz.cpl

The try Add/Remove Programs.

If that still fails, try going to www.kellys-korner.com and look for
Add/Remove Programs.

What happened when you tried to Start | Run ... appwiz.cpl?

By the way, do you have a CAD/CAM program installed on your system?

There is a bug with installation of some programs that install an Uninstall
Registry key and in one of the DefaultIcon entries, places a -1. Add/Remove
won't work.

How familiar are you with the registry and regedit.exe?
