Cant install windows xp update (KB887742)

I'm tearing my hair out - been having a few problems since installing new
antivirus software.
The update i'm trying to download is supposed to help with this.

Wont install - error code 80200010

Can anyone help ?

I have found that this problem is very common in Windows XP machines. I have
no idea why it happens, but once it happens, you will probably experience it
again and again. The following article has worked for me to fix it until the
next time I want to update. So I suggest, for lack of any better solution,
that you bookmark the following URL so you can get to it again easily. Just
follow the instructions and hopefully it will solve the problem for you too.

Sorry but this doesn't work either - my pc now does not shut down and hardly
any of my installed programmes work correctly !!!!

It may help then to tell us what part of it did work because so far
we don't even know if your OS is XPsp2; or, if it is WS2003, if you
use WUv5. (If it is XPsp2 we can at least assume WUv5.)


It may actually be safe to assume WUv5 because of the error code
(since it specifically refers to BITS). Then the error code is
indicating a connectivity problem. You haven't given us any details
in that regard either.
