Can't install WU

I have been trying to install WU for the past couple of weeks and all the
updates fail to install. I get the following message:

The following updates failed to be installed successfully:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB833987)
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1
(KB886903)
Security Update for Windows Messenger (KB887472)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB891781)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB888113)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - February 2005 (KB890830)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873333)

I am having the same problem as you, check out the new thread I started

I hope you get the solution, so far I have not got any where reading some
fixes etc from MS data base. Mean while I have turned of the updates in the
SERVICES (Local) group.

Try to Update one at a time. What Happens? Leave the KB886903 alone until
all others are installed.

Possibility – Check in C:\Windows\inf directory for the file branches.inf.
Right click the file, check properties, and make sure that the read only box is not
checked.

Note that the inf folder is hidden and is directly under the Windows folder.
Quickest way to open is:
From Start/Run, type in the following exact text:
%windir%\inf
Then Press OK, and the folder will open.

Click the “Go To Download Basket� link. Type in or browse to the location where you
