Can't install XP SP3

The problem started when I could not install Itunes with Quicktime. Registry
key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\Internet explorer\media could not be
updated (can't open or display).

I went to windows update to install XP SP3 and after a sussessful download,
the install also failed complaining about not able to update a registry key.

The symptom appears more related to locked registry keys than SP3 itself,
but I have no idea where to go from here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
