Can't log on - user profile and rpc services problem

I have a laptop with Vista, and when it starts up, it doesn't show the
welcome screen w/user id's and passwords. When I tried to boot into Safe
mode with command prompt, it came up with the welcome screen, but had "User
profile service failed to start" and "remote procedure call failed"

I'm assuming the RPC service is not running, and that's why the user profile
service isn't working, but how do I check the rpc service if I can't even get
the thing to boot?

Any suggestions/advice? thanks in advance.

Open Help and Support, and type into the search box:
To access the System Recovery Options menu
