cant logon after update

i had the bubble in the bottom left of my computer inform me of new updates i
followed the steps to update my windows xp and i was then instructed to
restart...which i did... i got the logon page appear and typed my password as
usual only to be told the command line was to long for the command or
something similar in a message box on a black screen.. i know cant get back
into my computer... please help.. i bought the computer second hand so have
no disks to 'repair' or re-install windows..
