Hello,

I received a bank statement in the format - Statement.pdf .dat as an
attachment to an email in Windows Mail. My machine has Vista 64 ultimate
with the latest updates.

When I click on the attachemnt to open it, first I get a small window
asking, "Do you want to Open this File?" Below it is shown the follwing
text:

Statement for July 2009.pdf .dat, Type: DAT file.

When I click the Open button, I get a red dot with white x notice
stating, "This file does not have a program associated with it to
perform this action. Create an association in the Set Associations
control panel." After I created the association to the Adobe Reader 9.1
through the Control Panel/Programs,... sequence, I am still unable to
open that file from within Windows Mail.

Curiously, if I save the file to my desktop, the .dat disappears and
the file becomes simply Statement.pdf and I am able to open it.

Could you please help me so that I can open such files from within
Windows mail?

Many Thanks,

Pedhambe

Apparently the sender is mistakenly adding the .dat extension.
Is the sender using Microsoft Outlook?
