hello: i posted on here a few days ago, but it's buried now.

i'm unfortunately a new vista user after my old laptop died. i'm now
trying to use the new winmail. whenever i try to open an attachment
winmail crashes. says (not responding). apparently the problem is
something called AppHangB1.

it looks like this:

Description:
A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows.

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: AppHangB1
Application Name: WinMail.exe
Application Version: 6.0.6000.16480
Application Timestamp: 4638f473
Hang Signature: e0ce
Hang Type: 16384
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Hang Signature 1: c48d875bdf068f1d050440e4e8315ed2

Additional Hang Signature 6: be2a
Additional Hang Signature 7: 37a19ea53d4dbf4bcdd5a6668e2470bf

it is very, very annoying.

i've already turned off the thing that says "do not open things that
could be a virus."

still have the same problem.

please help!

now, this is just a guess but it could be due to file associations -
what kind of files are you trying to open?

doesn't seem to matter:

i've tried word docs, pdfs, jpegs. don't know what this "file
association" is about--haven't had to do this with any previous mail
program i've used, mac or PC.

well, every file needs to be associated with a certain program so that
it opens.

have you tried saving the files to the desktop first and then double
clicking on them?

....yes, i've tried that, and it sort of works--i was able to save a pdf
to my desktop and then open it with adobe reader. but it still crashed
the mail program.

i also just tried to open a windows mail file--it had gotten kicked
back by daemon because i mis-typed the address, and i wanted to cut and
paste instead of re-typing the whole thing--and the same crash happened.

here, i'll try saving it to desktop.

yep. same thing. file appears on desktop, and i can then open it, but
it hangs winmail with the same message (not responding)

...thanks for the reply. i haven't thought about windows live mail...but
as my laptop is only about two weeks old, and i've just gotten the
systems up on winmail....

...well, shouldn't i just be able to use the windows mail i've just
gotten? i mean, can't it just open attachments and work like something
that works?

well, it _should_ work out of the box - but some other program thats
installed can overwrite the file associations?

of course, the other option would be trojan of some sort thats causing
conflicts. I would try scanning the system for virus/spyware.

If the OS does strange things it could well be that.

Hi,
I also have the same problem. No matter what type of file extension, windows
mail will not open it. It does not time out nor give an error message. If I
close the application and get the error box, it also give me the error
message below. I have disabled the "do not allow attachment" option in the
security tab.

Thanks

Which antivirus are you running? Any other third party security
programs?
