Could someone please help me?
I have a new job and am having work sent to my laptop via my e-mail
(hotmail). The work is .doc files. I think my vista is home basic (it
was already installed on a laptop from PC World, so I presume it won't
be premium!), and my MS Word is 2000. The file will download and save,
but for some reason the Word won't open it. The message I get is that
the file path is invalid. It suggests I try to use the open file and
locate the document that way, but that doesn't work either. I have a old
pc (clockwork, I think!) running XP and if I run the dial-up cable
around, it will download the files and open them using the same Word
programme. I have my laptop set up to work on but short of opening them
on the old pc, printing it out and copying into the laptop, I really
don't know how to solve this problem. I have seen quite a few similar
problems whilst searching desperately for a solution, but don't
understand the answers. Can someone help me in simple terms??

If the .doc file came from a newer version of Word, you may need the
compatibility pack or the Word document viewer to open it.
The newest version of Word is actually .docx format.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads
look for the word document viewer or under Office the compatibility pack

Many thanks for this suggestion. I have spent all night downloading th
word reader (blasted dial-up!), but this does not work either

When I use open with the reader I get a long winded message abou
various file endings under the heading 'usage'. It goes no further tha
that

I have tried detect and repair, and re-installing word. I have checke
the file permissions and as far as can gather all seems to be ok.
have also tried changing the file name as I was concerned it might hav
something to do with the underscores used in the name, but all to n
avail.

I thought it must be a word problem, but the same word discs were use
on the other pc which opens these documents, so I think it must be th
vista on the laptop. I use macafee on this laptop, but have had thi
problem before the macafee was installed

I am beginning to think the only way round this is to try and get vist
uninstalled and go back to XP, but would this cause new problems?
don't know

You said the .DOC files you are trying to open were produced at work.
WHAT VERSION of MS Word were used to produce them? I doubt that it
was Word 2000.

If it was a more recent version - as I suspect it was - they need to
be saved in an older format for Word 2000 to be able to open them.

If they aren't sensitive material, send one of them to my email
address that I use for these postings. I have Word 2000 on this
computer.

MNS has announced a short while ago that Hotmail e-mails can no longer be
received by anything else than Windows Live Mail.

No. WebDAV access will be (has been?) stopped, in favour of DeltaSync
access, using either Windows Live Mail, or Outlook, with the Outlook
Connector.

Oh, and paid accounts can be accessed using POP3 and any email client.
