Can't open microsoft.com

Good Day!

I have just installed Vista Home Basic (original and activated) in my HP
Pavillion DV6640BR. Nothing else is installed but the driver for the
ethernet device.
I can access all websites, except the ones with domain "microsoft.com".
Also, not possible to have the updates through Windows Update.
No error is displayed. Internet explorer just shows a blank page and in the
status bar is shown something like "Website found. Waiting for an answer..."
It keeps like that for hours with no error screen.
Microsoft helpdesk could not solve the problem up to now, but they're still
working on a solution.
Do you have any idea of what to do?

As info:

HP Pavillion DV6640BR
OS: Vista Home Basic 64-bit
Modem: Thomson Speedtouch 510 (maybe an outdated firmware??)
No firewall
No Anti virus

Check C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc for a file named HOSTS with no
extension. (Not Hosts.sam)
Make sure Windows is set to show hidden files and folders and is NOT set to
hide extensions for known file types.
If HOSTS exists, rename it to HOSTS.OLD
Reboot an try again.

Very strange... I also have a very same problem like it's described
here, and it's HP Pavilion a6232.sc. No, the solution given here
didn't help.

I tried doing your suggestion but it didn't work.
After several hours of researches at Google, I've noticed it had something
to do with the MTU. So, I've used below DOS command to change my MTU from
1496 to 1300:
netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Terra" mtu=1300 store=persistent
By the way "Terra" is the name of my connection.
Now I can open all sites...
