Hi,

I've got a problem with Vista User Access Control,
When I try to open it (in Pproperties->Security) it always end failed with
this message :
"Cannot open access control editor. Invalid value for registry".

My account got administrator privelege, and this problem applied for all
objects ("files/folders") in my HDD.
I'm Vista Home Basic Users, and I thought my system is still clean since I
got my PC just about 2 months ago.

I need Vista UAC feature to manage file permission in my PC,
Any help would be very appreciated..

Thanks before

Arya S.

Hello,

Can you open any other administrative applications, such as the registry
editor?

Yes, I do can.

Btw, addition, this error message occured when there is a windows shield
icon on "edit" button (it means to all other objects except the objects under
my account folder).

And I just figured out that if I turned off UAC (via MSCONFIG, then reboot)
I can get access to the edit security feature in properties. But if I turned
on it back, my file render unaccessible.

Thank you very much for your response, Jim.

Could you please do the following:

1) Make sure you have UAC turned ON

2) Download process monitor from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...ssmonitor.mspx
(direct link:
http://download.sysinternals.com/Fil...essMonitor.zip)

3) Extract procmon.exe, but do NOT run it yet

4) Open Windows Explorer, right-click on a folder, click properties, click
on the security tab

5) Run procmon.exe, and click OK on the screen that comes up to start
capturing

6) Go back to the properties window displaying the security tab, and then
click the edit button

7) When the error is displayed on the screen, go back to the process monitor
window and click the capture toolbar button to stop capturing (it is the
third button from the left, with a picture of a magnifying glass on it)

8) Click the save button to save to a file (in Native Process Monitor
Format)

9) Reply to me via e-mail with that file as an attachment

Thanks,

Oh, thank you. I'll send that to your e-mail

But..--pardon for my ignorance-- you didn't tell me your e-mail, did you??

I can't find your e-mail in your profile.

But from some source, I found your e-mail with domain @mvps.org. hope it's
the right one.
Or I just sent the attachment to ? (I
thought all user will get that such e-mail).

Well, I think I'll just send it to both of them..

And the file is quite big, (about 46MiB)

PS : Process Monitor is making change to my registry, It takes .PWL file
association, While I don't want to keep PM, the Explorer will always ask me
where is the .exe. : not good.

Thank you

Okay, Jim.. I've sent that to your e-mail @mvps.org. The file is RAR
compressed. Only about 3MiB and if extracted it should be sized 46.6MiB..

Okay, I revived this thread, hoping for another help, It had been 4 months
long since I posted the problem, still I couldn't get the solution.

My UAC won't work as described above/below (just refer to your sorting
system, ascending or descending)

My Vista is OEM, so AFAIK I can't get support from MS, while the
manufacturer itself, (I presume) won't covers this kind of OS-specific
problem, therefore they will just suggest the 'usage of Recovery Disc' to
restore everything 'all right.

Based from the error message, I believe we could conclude the problem is
located in the registry.
The problem is, I'm just a ordinary user, neither a Windows developer nor an
Windows expert, How could I possibly knew where is the culprit located,
while as we know, Windows' registry is just like jungle especially when we
talk about is size and structure.

Talking about expert, I'd like to say thank to J. Brush, one of MS' MVP. He
kindly trying to help me, even though in the end (I wonder why?) he didn't
reply anything at all, just after I followed his instruction. (He might be a
bit busy at the time

Ok, I'll just repost my problem, to make the issue more clear.
