Windows help says I should be able to pause and resume downloading windows
updates, but when I right or left click on the icon in the system tray,
nothing happens. I'm on a very slow dial-up connection in China. It's making
progress, but very slowly. Why doesn't the option to pause the download come
up?

I have not seen an option to Pause a download.
Now then, are you speaking of Automatic Updates, or the on-demand run to Windows Update website?

Do you know: What is the maximum number of hours you can stay connected --- before your service provider dis-connects ?

Can you tell which specific update this is ?

Microsoft has a number of servers worldwide to handle Windows Updates. But really your issue is more focused on using a dialup modem. Is yours at least a 58K modem?

Yes, in Help and Support for Windows XP it says,

"When you are ready for Windows to start downloading again, click the
automatic updating icon, and then click Resume.

"After the download has started, you can pause or resume downloading at any
time. If you close your Internet connection or restart your computer after
pausing a download, Windows automatically resumes the download the next time
you are connected to the Internet."

But I can't even click on the icon--right, left, double, single. This
happens whether I use automatic updates or on-demand updates.

The problem is that my connection is so slow, and I read some other
discussion posts that said that downloading updates doesn't slow down your
connection speed. Do you know if that's true? It sure seems like it slows my
connection down. Sometimes I would like to pause it. My connection is usually
less than 46 kbps--at least that's what it says, but it's actually slower
than that, depending on how many other people in the city are on the internet.
