Can't re-create default virtual directories.

I have SBS 2003 Standard w/ sp2.

In IIS Manager, under Default Web Site, the following virtual directories
are empty:
-exchange-oma
-Public
-Exchange
-Exadmin

In Exchange System Manager, under Exchange Virtual Server, the following
virtual directories are empty:
-Exadmin
-Exchange
-Public

I've followed the instructions in KB883380 "How to reset the default virtual
directories that are required to provide Outlook web Access, Exchange
ActiveSync, and Outlook Mobile Access services in Exchange Server 2003".
(Basically; delete DS2MB, then delete virtual directories, then restart
System Attendant & reboot.) I've followed the instructions step-by-step
very carefully at least 3 times. But it has not worked.

Do the virtual directories in Exchange Virtual Server need to be there in
order for KB883380's instructions to work? If so, do I need to re-create
them by reinstalling Exchange?

Is it practical to rebuild them manually.

Is there some other method that I can use to re-create these directories.

Thanks.

You would not expect to see anything under those VDirs in IIS. They are a
bit 'special' and don't really have a heirarchy that you can browse in the
way that you may be expecting. The directories need to be present in ESM
before you delete them in IIS and follow the described procedure (I think
method 3 is easiest). They should then reappear in IIS; but like I say, you
can't see anything underneath them in the GUI. Why do you want to recreate
them? I assume you OWA is not functioning? What error messages are
displayed?

Thanks. I think that narrows down my problem. I guess the reason why they
aren't being re-created in IIS is because they are empty in System Manager.
But how do I recreate them in System Manager?

You're right, OWA isn't functioning. It had been working up until a couple
of weeks ago when I was trying to get ActiveSync to work with an IPhone and
apparently messed something up.

Now I can go to Remote Web Workplace, but to get to the web logon page I get
a "Windows Security" popup asking for my password (I had not been getting
these popups before). Then after I log on at the web logon page, I get the
same popup. Then inside RWW, when I click on the "Use OWA" link I get a
white page with two words in the upper left corner (maybe "not found". I
forget, because since then I've screwed it up more by trying to manually
re-create the virtual directories in IIS.) All the other links on that page
seem to be OK. And Outlook configured with RPC over HTTP is still working.

So how can I fix this without doing too much more damage?

Thanks.

Try reinstalling Exchange. You might want to ask about doing that in an SBS
forum because SBS does that kind of thing differently.
