Can't read CD files after update

I'm running XP, SP2. After a series of windows security updates last week,
my DVD-RW will no longer read data files. It will play audio CD's. When a
data CD or DVD is inserted, it shows as a blank disk.

I can play DVD's with PowerDVD, even though they are shown as blank disks in
My Computer. I can burn CD-R's, and though they show as blank on my
computer, they work in other computers.

After being unable to fix the problem, I purchased a new DVD-RW, and I am
still having the same problem.

....and, System Restore won't work prior to the updates. No remedy there.
