Can't reboot after installing latest security updates.

I installed the latest batch of security updates (8 of them!) yesterday
on my HP 750N running Windows XP SP2, and was instructed to reboot.

The result is a message saying that the FAT32 system on my D drive is
corrupt and needs to be checked. Whether I permit the check or not, the
system re-starts the boot process and goes right back to the same page.
I can boot into safe mode (it takes about 10 minutes to start up), but
not into regular mode.

Bizarrely, the same thing happens when I disable the D drive in the
BIOS.

I just ran AVG anti-virus (result:clean) and Lavasoft AdAware
SE(result: just mickeymouse dataminer cookies). In both cases I got the
latest update from their sites.

The uninstall folders for the 8 updates just contain a text file in
their spuninst subfoilder --- a DOS copy command, except for 867282,
which also contains 2 reg files.

I'm attaching the log file for the first update that ran (or failed?).
The files it complains about never existed, as far as I can tell. They
certainly don't exist on my other PC, also running windows XP SP2.

All suggestions are appreciated.
