Windows Update killed my machine last night.
Actually I can only reboot in safe mode, Otherwise get the blue screen when attempting to boot. Even videotaped screen to catch errors message, but no specific error codes appear ..only the generic "a problem has been encountered"...Here's the windowsupdate.log file..The udpates were downloaded about 5am, machine was logged on to my daughters (non-admin) account until about 11pm when I rebooted and windows informed me of the updates ready to install...I answered OK to install them and BAM...I think the first error is at timestamp 2004-12-16 00:16:27-0600. Any ideas on how to get my machine to boot again. Searching Microsoft knowledge base for the error 800704dd, I found article Q233976 but not sure it helps resolve the issue..
SYMPTOMS When you try to retrieve the UserName property by using the WScript.Network object in a Windows 95/98 logon script, you receive a null value. In some cases you may also receive an error code of 800704DD. CAUSE This issue occurs because a Windows 95/98 logon script is run before the logon process is complete. RESOLUTION To work around this issue, use a While loop to continue to retrieve the value as long as it remains null. The following VBScript code is a sample of how to implement the workaround. You're very confused..I installed SP2 months ago...Two of the three still
running fine. Only the one with the recent KB885835, etc. fails. How did I get so lucky to get Mr. Sarcastic offering 'help'...BTW, I think you meant "they're" instead of "there" still running. I'm not sure how you ended up being "lucky" enough to get help from S.W., but let's put that aside for now. The best thing to do here is to go back in time and thus uninstall these updates, then install these updates one at a time. That way, we can see which one causes your issue. Yes, we can (virtually) go back in time where the Operating System is concerned, and undo the instability! Here's how: 1. As you boot the machine, press F8 to enter Safe Mode. 2. Log into the local Administrator account. 3. Click Start 4. Click Run 5. type: msconfig 6. Click OK or hit the <Enter> key. 7. When the System Configuration Utility opens, make sure you are looking at the General tab. 8. Click the "Launch System Restore" button. This will open a wizard. 9. On the calendar in the wizard, select December 14. This will be the date before the four updates you installed. 10. Click OK through the wizard and reboot. This should bring you back to a working and stable Windows XP. I suggest you now get the updates *One* at a time. Reboot with each of the 4 critical updates, so that your installs are narrowed down, and if you see any problems, we can focus in on the one that you were installing.
