Can't remove pics!

I don't want to delete my pics, but I don't want them in the gallery anymore.
Help tells me to right click on a folder and then choose "remove from
gallery." I don't have this option.

That feature is not present. You can only "Delete" the folder from the
folder pane. This would remove the pictures to the recycle bin. Create a new
folder in your User ID folder, and highlight and drag all the photos out of
the folder you want to remove, then rightclick the old folder in the Gallery
folder pane, and 'delete'. The New Folder could be added to the "Folders"
item with a rightclick 'add folder to gallery', but until you did that,
Gallery will not display this New folder.

You can only remove folders that you imported.

Might be worth a try to rename or delete the
Photo Gallery database:

No guarantees...but if you are trying to clean up
and start over...the following info may be useful:

Photo Gallery generates a database named
"Pictures.pd4" it's found at the following location.

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\
Windows Photo Gallery\Pictures.pd4

The file can also be found with an Advanced
Search for pd4.

Go to...Start / Search / Advanced Search.

Check the box..."Include non-indexed, hidden,
and system files" Enter pd4 in the Name field

Renaming or deleting the .pd4 file should
clean up your Photo Gallery.

Try renaming it... Pictures.OLD
If you are unhappy with the results...you can
try changing it back to Pictures.pd4.

on your computer.

You can remove folders that you have added to Photo Gallery at any time, but
you can't remove the folders that are in Photo Gallery by default. Removing
a folder prevents it from being displayed in Photo Gallery. While you can
remove folders from Photo Gallery, you can't remove individual pictures or
videos. You can, however, delete pictures from Photo Gallery at any time. If
you delete a picture it is deleted from your computer as if you deleted it
from the Pictures folder.

In addition, you can't remove a subfolder without removing its top-level
folder as well. In the following example, you can remove the folder called
Family, which will also remove all of its subfolders. However, you can't
remove only the folder called Children or Grandparents.

Click to open Windows Photo Gallery.

In the Navigation pane, right-click the folder you want to remove, and then
click Remove from Gallery.

That is what I said I did in my initial post. "Remove from Gallery" is not
an option.

Perhaps I am not making myself clear. I never had this program before. It
came pre-installed on my new laptop and I hate it! I save a lot of pictures
off the internet by right clicking and saving. I put them in personal files.
I don't want this in the photo gallery program too, but they just go there.
Some pics I don't want my family to see. Yet this program is exposed to
everyone. If I delete the pic from the program it is deleted from my
personal file also. I hate that even a list of my personal files is
available in this gallery program.

You, good sir, are a genius! Renaming the PD4 file worked perfectly for me,
but I think it also had to do with the fact that I reset a registry value
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Photo
Gallery\GalleryScopedFolders) to "C:\Users", from its initial value of "C:\"
(which had my photo gallery littered with icons and program graphics from
c:\windows and c:\program files).

Renaming the file (after the above fix), forced the WPG to re-create the
file, only using the folder(s) I specified. Even my tags seem to be in
place!!!

For the original post... my suggestion would be to do 1 of 2 things:
1. Do what I did, but put your registry value as
"c:\users\YOURNAME\Pictures\THEFOLDERYOUWANTTOINCL UDE", then follow John's
suggestion of file renaming.
2. If you aren't comfortable editing registry values, just copy your "folder
to hide" to a location outside of c:\users\YOURNAME\Pictures, then follow
John's suggestion. It sounds like I'm the only user out there who somehow
ended up with c:\ as my default folder (that can't be removed).
