Can't rename files after XP's SP3 update

I posted this in the general category, but thought this may be a better place
so I posted it here too. I updated with SP3 for XP Pro and now if I do a slow
double click (select and then click again) to rename a file I just get a flat
"clunk" sound. If I right click, the "rename" option is not there. I
uninstalled the update through add/remove programs. That didn't help, so I
did a system restore. That gave me back the ability to rename files, but I
lost my internet (both wired and wireless). I reversed the restore, got
internet back, but lost "rename" again. I really don't want to reformat since
it was so hard to find the drivers after downgrading from Vista (still
looking for some). Any help is appreciated.
