Here's a new problem. When I try to rip a cd (any cd...I tried a number of
them) I get "error" under the "rip status" column and then when I look under
the properties of one of the songs it says "the file is missing media usage
rights". What do I do? Thanks for any help.

Digital Rights Management - DRM

Try this:
Open WMP
Click: Tools>Options>Rip Music Tab
Clear the checkbox for: "Copy protect music"
now try ripping.

Just a note, media usuage rights fall under DRM,
and the rights as such, allow specifics such as play,
burn or sync.
As you are ripping from commercial release CD's
this won't be an issue, but it once was....
There was a furore not so long back when Sony
hid rootkits on some releases, but thats all died
down now.
