when I click on the icon, it runs in the processes as msnmsgr.exe but nothing
shows up!!! I can run older versions like 7.5 but not 8.0 or 8.1.

Greetings Alan,

What you're describing can be typically a router deadlocking Messenger.

Assuming this is the case, reset the router (aka unplug and plug back in) and if that doesn't
resolve it, try seeing if there's a firmware update for the router at the router
manufacturers website.

Failing that, as a workaround for the time being, you can use the updated version of MSN
Messenger 7.0.

To do so, download from here:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/detai...4-9505f47bed45

I am having the same problem even though I have apparently had my computer
program "updated" automatically by msn. every time i have downloaded 8.0 or
8.1 i am advised the download has been completed successfully but then when i
sign in I receive notice the system "encountered a problem" and then the
program is automatically shut down and I am then advised the problem has to
do with "MY Way" the program creator. any solutions to this to stop it from
happening?

That worked, and I have to say , you reminded me this is what I did last time
but forgot this work around., hopefully I will continue to remember this from
now on.

I would love to keep the old version.
I just hope it doesn't force an upgrade because 7.5 did.

Hi Alan,

7.5 contains a security hole which was fixed in a newer version of 7.0 (which is what the
link below was), that's the only reason 7.5 gives a forced upgrade prompt.

Messenger 7.0 works but it knocks my internet connection off when I try to
sign in. Then it reconnects, then I have to sign in again. Not ideal.
