was able to save in word, 'til yesterday. now when i click save button (or
ctrl s or file... save as), word locks up. must ctrl alt del & go into task
mgr, then choose end now b/c word is not responding. did windows update & it
does not solve. norton says there are no viruses. i already did a disk clean
up to delete temp internet files, etc. i also ran disk defragmenter. never
had prob before, now suddenly prob is here.

also noticed that when i click down arrow in address bar of internet
explorer to go to previously viewed web sites, internet explorer locks up.
again, ctrl alt del, then end task b/c internet explorer not responding.

Perhaps the following will solve your issue:

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell
after you install security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

Easy Fix: Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Item No. 383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software - Fix (MS06-015)"
to download a registry fix.

Note: You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus program
in order to safely run the scripted fix.

Also, review the following:

MS06-013: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912812

Internet Explorer ActiveX compatibility patch for Mshtml.dll
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917425/

Exactly the same problem as Bill & Leanne Conrad. I think also that Explorer
is not working properly. I have wasted a whole morning struggling with this.
Microsoft lob out unsatisfactorily debugged software in order to minimise
cost and maximise profit, regardless of the cost in time/energy to all those
of us who pay handsomely for the software.

I had same problem starting 4/16. Also in Excel. Office totally disabled and
IE not working properly. I uninstalled the 4/16 Microsoft Updates and
everything back to normal although did have to change my macro security
settings in Office to be able to open files.

Dear N Lee,
My son, who is currently serving the military in Iraq, takes care of my
computer. How do I change my macro security settings to open files and
uninstall the 4/16 update? Thanks.

Click, Start then click, Control Panel, then double click, Add Remove
Programs. (Classic View) At the top of the window that opens is a little box
that says Updates. Click that so that when the programs list is populated,
the updates show up. Scroll to the bottom of the list until you find the
Microsoft Security updates. Click the first one and then click Remove. Follow
onscreen instructions. Your computer is going to shut down and reboot after
you remove each update. One of the updates will pop up an additional warning
message when you go through the remove process. Click Yes and continue with
uninstall. You might not need to change your macro settings. After you
complete the uninstalls, check Office and see if you can open files. If you
get a message regarding macros, click Tools, click the arrow at the bottom of
the dropdown list so that Macros is displayed. Click Macros and change your
security setting to Medium.

To fix this since you cannot do system restore on your computer
to any previous date, you have to remove the updates individually from My
Computer, Add/Remove Programs, REMOVE Security 908531, Hotfix 912812 and
911567. Restart your computer and you will now be able to SAVE DOCUMENTS in
MS Programs and view sites in Internet Explorer!

Would recommend turning off automatic window updates until Microsoft has
fixed their supposed 'fixes'.

More clarification - - the problem does not lie within Word itself.

The problem in Word is not that it doesn't save - it still does a routine
'save' (i.e. to the same file-name/path). It's when you do 'save AS', in
order to put the document into the right sub-file in My Documents. You click
on the file to open it and lo, Word freezes.

The same thing happens when you try to OPEN a document in Word. As soon as
you click on the sub-file where it is, Word freezes.

But exactly the same thing happens outside Word. I still use the traditional
'explore' display to move through my computer files - I right-click and
select 'explore' to get the 'tree diagram' in the left pane (where you click
on a file and see the contents in the right pane). Since the last XP update,
this FREEZES when I click on a subfile to display its contents. Word
obviously borrows this code for browsing (during 'Open' and 'Save As') - and
the code has now been messed up.

Further confirmation - when I first sent an error report, was prompted to
download updates for Word. Did so but this made no difference. Repeat,
problem isn't in the Office code but in the XP code that runs the left pane
when file searching in 'explore' mode.

It's fairly easy to cope for the time being - save new docs in Word in 'My
document', then minimise Word, and move the doc to the correct file manually
using the standard full page file by file display (i.e. not the two-pane
'explore' mode). To open a file, minimise Word and open it from 'My
Documents'.)

But it is a nuisance.

I had the same problem as describe! I remove the 3 updates/hot fixes
and everything started to work properly. Thanks!
