Can't search fo updates

I have Windows Vista and as of yesterday I am unable to search for Windows
updates. I haven't installed anything new.

Home Premium, with Service Pack 1. The error code is 80070005, which it says
is an unknown error. I've looked through some of the previous discussions on
that error however I couldn't find any that helped me since I haven't added
any new hardware or programs for about a month.

I have McAfee as my antivirus, if that sheds any light at all.

Yes, it does. The 80070005 error translates to " Access Denied " and is
most likely related to McAfee.
Suggest you Clean Boot Vista and then either try to to update once more.

If no joy, while still in the Clean Boot state, reset the Windows Update
components:

Run ResetWindows.msi in it's Default mode. If the system still can not
update, run it in it's Aggressive mode.
Reboot after each run and see if the system can update now.

I followed those steps and unfortunately they didn't repair the problem.
Yesterday the FixIt in default mode was able to connect and retrieve 17 new
updates released on the 9th, however I am still getting the same error
80070005 whenever I try to instal them.

I've noticed that whatever it is seems to be disrupting printer drivers as
well. My default printer should be Print to OneNote, however that option
disappeared from my print menu and was replaced by Print to XPSWriter
instead. When I tried to insert items as printouts in OneNote, it told me the
program's printer driver was damaged.

My HP external printer has also been effected - it no longer prints margins
at the top of the page.

I restored my system back to a point before the following updates:
- Internet Explorer 8 for Windows Vista
- PowerPoint Viewer 2007 SP2
- 2007 Microsoft office Suite SP2
- Windows Vista Update KB955430

and all of the errors disappeared. However, because Windows Update started
working again, the errors are all back! How can I find out which of those
updates is causing the problems, and is there a way that I can stop it?

I have also uninstalled McAfee and replaced it with AVG Free in case that
was still somehow causing the problem. Looks like it wasn't, though.

Cazlet, restore your system back again to where it all works right, then
try changing your update options to "Download but ask me before
installing". This will let you install them one at a time and you will
see which one is the culprit.

This is my problem. This is my computer. I started this thread. From what I
can tell, all of the errors seem to have come from one of the updates, which
is exactly what I wrote in the previous comment.

If you have any suggestions other than what Dave has already offered, I
would be happy to hear them.

Thanks Dave,

Unfortunately those restore points aren't available. The last time I did the
system restore, there was a box that said 'choose a restore point from more
than 5 days ago' however now the only restore options I have are for the
updates that attempted to instal and failed each time. I'll go back to the
earliest I can, but I'm not able to go back to before those four.

That was not a wise idea. Ideally, you would have Uninstalled all those
updates first; If the behavior persisted, then you'd use System Restore.

What McAfee application had been installed and was your subscription still
current when you uninstalled it?

Was the McAfee application running in the background when you installed IE8?

After uninstalling the McAfee app, did you download/run the McAfee Consumer
Products Removal Tool *before* you installed AVG Free (v8.5)? See
