Can't search or index a temp directory

If I create a folder (directory) named "temp", Vista search will not
find a file in it, even though it is checked under indexing options. In
fact, if a folder named "temp" appears anywhere in the path, no files
below that level will be indexed or searchable. I'm not talking about
system folders, I'm talking about a user folder that just happens to be
named "temp".

Give it a try. Create a folder, name it temp, and try to search for a
file in it. You won't find it. Then, rename temp to something else, and
it works. Change it back to temp, and the contents are not searchable.

I won't ask whether this is a feature or a bug, these terms can usually
be used interchangably when it comes to Vista anyway. But perhaps
someone can explain to me why this is, and whether there is any way
around it?

Simple: Microsoft decided that folders named "temp" should not be
searched since they are obviously temp folders of no value. I think
it's downright rude and arrogant of you to disagree! :-)

Sadly, you are just beginning to approach the parentally controlling,
non-intutive, non-standard, performance abusing aspects of the
convoluted sub system known as Vista Search.

My suggestion it to install Agent Ransack and use that instead. You
can then also disable the Windows Search Index Service and eliminate
that performance thief. http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/

Thanks Frank and +Bob+ --- I tried your suggestion, Frank. I now can
find the shortcuts to files in temp, provided I've touched them recently
enough for them to have shortcuts in AppData/Roaming...RecentItems. But
I can't find the files themselves. I even rebuilt the index after
making your change, and rebooted. Perhaps +Bob+ and I have something
legit to whine about here!
