Can't see emoticons

After getting my laptop back from Sony (with a new motherboard), I cannot see
any emoticons; neither in my contacts' list or when I am chatting. The only
thing I see are the symbols for example: ( f ) ( l ). I am running Windows
Live Messenger 8.1 Build 178. I have tried removing it and loading it again.
I have also downloaded and installed Adobe (Macromedia) Flash player (just
in case).

Any ideas?

Greetings Carlos,

Close all conversation windows, open the main conversation window, then click the Tools menu
(or press Alt-T on the keyboard if the menu is hidden), then Options and make sure the 'Show
emoticons' option is selected and click OK.

Hi,

Don't feel so bad -- this is triggered off and on in each conversation window by hitting
Alt-T, and then E. I know lots of people that hit this accidently occasionally. That's why
you don't realize you turned it off
