Can't seem to use Windows Update

Since the windows update page was changed, I cannot use windows update. I
will click the Windows update link from the programs menu, or go directly
there in IE, but once it gets to the page, it gets stuck on the "Checking for
the latest version of Windows Update" page. Any ideas whats up? Is there a
place to go where I can (easily) download all the updates I need for my
computer?

Update: Using a post by Tauraurian i was able to get a little further. I
now get to the page that lets you pick express or custom install, and get
error #8007043C after choosing either. I did a search on that error and
found nothing.

If you've XP, get SP2.
If you've SP2 try reinstalling or contact MS.

I have XP, part of the reason I'm doing this is to get SP2, along with all
the other updates I haven't had for months. Will getting SP2 fix this error?
After doing some reading up it looked like it was a nasty error...
