Can't send emails

Hi.

I recently activated Windows email and imported my emails from Tiscali. I
have checked 'my server requires authentication', and received the following
error message:

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'test', Account: 'pop.tiscali.co.uk',
Server: 'smtp.tiscali.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 Sorry,
your non-local IP address **** is not allowed to send email via me.', Port:
25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC6F

I then changed the outgoing server to mail.btinternet.com as my ISP is
currently BT and this is what theeir website says. When I try to send emails
then, I get the windows security logon. When I enter my username and
password, it just keeps reappearing as if I have entered it incorrectly. I
have rechecked the details in properties and I am entering them correctly.
When I cancel the logon screen,I get a blank error.

Please help, as I am getting very frustrated and I now don't know how to
transfer my emails back to my email provider account to use that instead.
Thanks

Do you still have pop.tiscali.co.uk as the incoming server?

Try this first: Keep mail.btinternet .com as the SMTP server, but
uncheck the setting "My server requires authentication.

If no improvement, test your password by logging in to your
btinternet webmail: http://bt.yahoo.com .
If that works, it proves you have the correct username and password.

I have tried that but now get the following error message
The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '***'. Subject 'test', Account:
'pop.tiscali.co.uk', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server
Response: '530 authentication required - "Your email could not be sent. To
fix this you must make a simple change to your email (known as SMTP
authentication). For advice visit www.btyahoo.com/smtp"', Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

I don't actually have a logon for BT Internet as it's not my account. In
the Settings of Server requires authentication I had checked 'use same
settings as incoming server'

Does this mean I now have to open an account with BT?

Yes, if you want to use the mail.btinternet.com mail server for
sending mail you will need an account with BT.
Once you do so, you will need to make a few changes:

In Windows Mail go to Tools, Accounts, select your pop.tiscali.co.uk
account, click Properties, Servers. Verify that the name of the outgoing
(SMTP) server is mail.btinternet.com. Do not change the incoming server.
Also, make sure that the "My server requires authentication" option is checked.
Click the adjacent "Settings" button. Select "Log on using"
then enter your BT email address, and the associated password. Click OK.
Try sending.

Thanks for this Gary. Sounds so simple!

I've tried to set this up, but the only thing I seem to be able to do is set
up a Yahoo account. Will this solve the problem, or would I have to set up a
sub account on the account holder's bt account?

Thanks again... and apologies if I'm being dim!

Yes a free UK-Yahoo account will work, since it gets POP/SMTP access.
See http://help.yahoo.com/l/uk/yahoo/mai...op/pop-08.html
but ignore any portions pertaining to receiving.

To make that work, in my instructions below replace mail.btinternet.com
with smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk. Then, in the "Log on using" section enter
your Yahoo email address and password.

If you get an error message with port 25, see the section in the above link
that says "If you're unable to send email, try using port 587..."

Hi Gary.

I have now set up the yahoo account, verified the tiscali address and tried
to send using both ports 25 & 587. I now get the following error:
The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '****'. Subject 'test', Account:
'pop.tiscali.co.uk', Server: 'smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Server
Response: '553 From address not verified - see
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mai...ndfrom-07.html',
Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 553, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

Thanks again in advance

If you use a 'From' address other than @yahoo.com, Yahoo requires you
to verify that you own that email address before you are allowed to send.
Follow the procedure here:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mai...ndfrom-07.html
