Can't send mail from Internet Explorer 7

When I click on a mail link (or a email adress) in Internet Explorer 7 I get
an error message saying something like this

"The action could not take place as the standard client for mail is not
installed correct"

It is very annoying as I then have to mark up the email adress and use
copy-paste to send the mail from within Windows mail.

Anybody has suggestion about this error?

Set Windows Mail to take all of the defaults...

Start - Default Programs - Set your default programs
highlight Windows Mail, click "Set this program as default"
OK

Thank you for your proposition, but I have done that but unfortunately the
problem still persists. Any other suggestions?

Reset your Internet Explorer settings > click Tools > Options > Advanced
(tab) > under "Reset Internet Explorer settings" > click "Reset".

Go to Control Panel (Classic view) > Default Programs > "Set your default
programs" link, highlight Internet Explorer and Windows Mail and press the "Set
this program as default" green arrow.

My apologies to Dave, I see he had already responded. (I had view messages by
thread disabled.)

Gudmund,

Do you have Norton or McAfee installed? Both very frequently can cause problems
like this. Do you have any other problems with Windows Mail?

No I do not have other problems with Windows Mail, but this one is annoying.
I don't run Norton or McAfee. I run AVG free edition.

I have done that but it does not help. Do you have more suggestions?

You set defaults for BOTH Internet Explorer and Windows Mail, rebooted and went
back to see if the settings stuck?

I use Windows Mail, but after installing and un-installing a free
version of Microsoft Office, I started getting the error message
"default mail client not properly installed" when I would click on web
page email links. I tried all the fixes I could find in this forum but
none solved my problem. However, I was able to get Windows Mail working
properly again simply by going to start, default programs, set program
access and computer defaults, then chose Microsoft Windows and click OK.
This action somehow added the MailTo protocol back into the file
associations and the configuration automatically went back to custom.
Hope this works for you too.
