Since Sunday last week, 15 Oct 06, have not been able to sign in - login to
Windows Live Messenger. I've attempted to 'repair', 'restore', remove and
reinstall the program. I've even checked services, firewall settings and
there has been no change, it simply continues to 'signing in..' I've checked
for any fix and so far, there is none. I've talked to friends and co-workers
who normally use the service and they have not been able to login either. I
would like to learn what the fix is for this.

Greetings,

Could you describe exactly what's happening and any error code you're seeing?

If the Messenger buddy's are just spinning, shut down Messenger entirely by right-clicking on
its icon in the notification area and choosing Exit, then download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/dow...lmpolicies.reg

Then try signing in again.

I don't get an error message. It just keeps 'trying.. and trying..'. I've
checked all that I know and can short of making registry hacks. I just don't
see any errors and none show in the event viewer either.

Hi,

What you're describing is typically caused by a problem last week which is fixed by that .reg
file that I already indicated. Could you try that if you haven't already?

Additionally, I apologize for the double posting, the initial one supposedly didn't go
through and resent itself.

Greetings,

A possible fix would to do the following:

Go to Start, run, and type regedit

Then, navigate to the following key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\

And delete the MSNMessenger key.

Then, restart Messenger.

If Messenger still fails to respond, then you will have to reinstall
Messenger.

Tell me if that helps :-)

Thank you for your post. I was trying to find the registry hack, or 'folder'
to delete instructions that I had found earlier. Now, while this did fix my
problem, I still do not understand the reason this happened. Is there any
information anywhere that can explain why this occurred?

Hi,

If you had ran my .reg file you would have gotten the same result. This occurred due a
misconfiguration on the Messenger servers which caused an erroneous configuration set in the
registry which prevents successful logins. You just remove that setting so everything works
again.

Thanks for the .reg file, it fixed my problem. Unable to login I would get
error 81000395.
