Can't start auto updates service

When I try to do a windows update, it tells me I must have the
following services running:

- Automatic updates
- BITS
- Event Log

BITS and Event Log are already running but when I try to start the
automatic updates service, I get a message from the scp that a related
device or service is not started. Automatic Updates is checked in the
My Computer->Properties->Automatic Updates tab.

Are there other services that need to be running to get this to work?

On a possibly related subject, anyone know if the
cashback.exe/bargains.exe spyware thing is a worm or did someone
inadvertantly install something off a website?

cashback.exe is most likely a tipoff that the system *may* be infested
with malware ( formerly known as spy|adware ). Recent versions of
malware have a tendency to either deny a system the ability to
successfully access Windows Update or interfere with one's ability to
obtain updates due to their presence.

Go here and do the preliminary steps towards removing said malware:

Sorry - I should have been more clear. Cashback is on a different
computer where (ironically) auto-updates are working fine. The computer
with auto-updates that won't start in the SCP is spyware-free...

I'll check that out. Thanks.

ok, i guess nobody's interested...

Anyway, turns out the service was set to automatic on the general page
but was disabled in the advanced tab "login" listbox.
