Can't start VLC player with a double click on an attachement using windows mail

When I get mail with an WMV attachment but when I save the attachment to the
desktop and double click it VLC player starts right up and off we go. What
else do I need to do to be able to launch WMV attachments from windows mail?
I have VLC set as my default wmv player so that is done but something is
stopping this from working properly.
