Can't stop Automatic Updates service

I can't stop the Automatic Updates service in services.msc. I get this error:
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a
timely fashion, when I try to stop it.
I tried reinstall WU service as adviced here:

On a freshly rebooted computer, do this as first thing:

Start regedit.exe and delete the following key (contains the WU
service configuration):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv

Do a reboot again.

Win XP Home SP2 with all updates.

Hi, Tom;

Why are you trying to stop the Automatic Update service? The steps you
mention seem to be a difficult method for installing AU on an XP Home
SP2 system that already has AU installed.

Hi.

I find out with utility User Profile Hive Cleanup, that one instance of
svchost hanging on shutdown. This instance hosting AU. Then I tried stop it
manualy and find out, that I can't. So I want to make this service stopable
for shutdown without problem. BTW, this service is not needed until some MS
updates is released.
